New Risa, the common name for Yolvanda II, is the pleasure planet of the Gamma Quadrant. It is owned and operated by the Wadi. The planet is sparely populated and does not sport any natural civilizations.

Characteristics

New Risa is a stunning blue-green planet, characterized by its sprawling oceans and vibrant landmasses dotted with lush forests, rolling hills, and majestic mountain ranges. The atmosphere casts a soft azure hue, particularly during twilight, giving the planet an ethereal glow.

History

The Wadi colony, officially known as the resort "New Risa" was founded in the early 2370s following the Wadi's historic visit to Deep Space Nine. It was planned to open the resort by 2373, but the Dominion War prevented that from happening. The resort received its first visitors in 2376.

Galactic Affairs

Though the Wadi are known for exuberance, New Risa is not a fully independent world. It relies heavily on trade with visiting species, often exchanging latinum or other currency for services and/or use of the resort facilities. Any profits from the facilities are then put back into trade in order to keep supplies and foodstuffs stocked.

Frequent storms do ravage the facilities, which reduces capacity and the desire for tourism and participation. New Risa's reliance on external goods and currency constantly threaten to jeopardize New Risa's status as Gamma's pleasure planet.

The Federation, as a token of good will, maintains a steady stream of supplies to the colony. The USS Black Hawk participated in one of these supply runs in 2388 during the Consortium Crisis. While the Black Hawk was in orbit, a devastating disease ravaged both the world and the ship. Several dozen crew and tourists die before the ship's Chief Medical Officer, Doctor Kij, develops a cure (Black Hawk, Mission 8).

Both the disease and the Consortium hampered the colony's status for a few months, before seeing a revival a month after the Crisis ended.

For the next two years, the Wadi's resort thrived. In the summer of 2390, a terrible storm ravaged the resort. The Wadi requested from the Federation materials to repair, including an industrial replicator. A convoy was dispatched in June 2390, escorted once more by the Black Hawk.
