Pity is Treason (Part 8)

Klin wasn’t quite sure about the importance of his orders, the Commander had been very secretive about things the last couple of weeks and the order to have security patrols run in every part of the facility seemed kind of unusual considering the advanced alert status and thus the need for a constant team in reserve to handle invaders. That being said, orders were orders and it seemed these one came from the Commodore rather than the Commander directly.

“Li to Station Operations, about to enter Gamma.” He said over the communications channel while getting his phaser rifle ready just in case. With him were six of the most well trained security officers in the quadrant. Or at least so he’d like to think. As soon as they entered the area there was some weird feedback over the communications channel but it was promptly dismissed as just a small error, they would happen every now and then. “We’re splitting up in two-man teams to cover a larger area quicker. Anything that looks out of the ordinary, report it immediately” Klin said before heading in one of the three directions.

He was not expecting to find anything but after walking for a few minutes the Ensign with him noticed something unusual coming out of one of the panels. “Sir, you have to see this” The Ensign said, Klin quickly turned around and saw what appeared like a flashing light in between two panels. “Watch my back” He said before pulling the panel off the wall. It immediately revealed a spatial charge planted way too close to the shield generator for his liking. “Ensign, move away from this corridor. Keep guard from a distance” He said before tapping his combadge. “Li to Station Operations. I am going to need an Engineering team here”

The same feedback would make a return however with no response coming back from Operations. The charge was clearly on a timer and there wasn’t nearly enough time to get someone to run to Operations and back in time with a team. With a sigh he moved closer to the device. He had done basic explosive ordnance disposal back in the Academy and the charge did seem like standard Starfleet issue so it shouldn’t be too hard right? As he slowly removed the various layers on the device he could hear the sound of phaser fire and someone falling on the ground behind him. “I can’t let you do that Lieutenant” Klin heard upon which he quickly grabbed his rifle and turned to the place the sound came from. He could instantly recognize the Klingon standing in front of him as the Marine CO.

“Kohlar? What the hell are you doing?” Klin asked surprise as he had learned to consider the Klingon a friend but the dead Ensign behind him wasn’t exactly hiding his intentions here today.

“The corruption within Starfleet must be purged, only the true can survive” Kohlar said before pointing the phaser at Klin. The latter managed to miss the initial shot and fire in return but by then it was already too late. A clearly audible beep signified the time was up and all Klin could see was the white light that followed before it all turned black.
