A week later, the Flotsam arrives at the Rakhari Colony where Di Pasquale had carried the Gaittithes probes nearly two weeks ago. Overtures of trade and favors are discussed before Seskal reveals that they are needing some help exporting crops and other items to a human colony on Mellon to assist them with mining birythium from their mountains. Upon arrival at Mellon, the crew of the Flotsam is greeted by Richard Carter, the leader of the Golden Stars. He expresses his thanks to Francisca and team for their willingness to ferry goods between worlds, and he reveals that their birythium mining efforts have only just begun. Francisca and Richard discuss some general details, and Francisca agrees to haul a load of birythium the following morning once it is ready. The crew of the Flotsam is invited to stay at the colony overnight, and even join Richard for dinner. They are soon joined by Richard's wife, Alice, and daughter, Emily. Richard and Alice leave to handle some administrative work, while Emily agrees to take Francisca and Jack to tour the mines.
The tour provides both Di Pasquale/Massara and Foy/Smith with a properly look at the quarry and mines, while they both learn about Emily's colorful past with Starfleet and the Black Hawk. Meanwhile, Wallace/Kryll and Tetnel/Milan tour the Spartan town square to learn more about the local culture. There, they meet a bartender and learn more about how the colony was founded, along with their reluctant hope for the future with the birythium.
That evening at dinner, the Flotsam crew get the chance to freshen up and learn more about the Carter family. Just as they are about to sit down, however, Richard shares that an old friend is about to visit. This friend, D'rimo, a freighter captain and close ally of the Carter Family, arrives. Almost immediately, he greets Richard with a wrapped present. Richard, estatic thinking that it was a special treat, opens the box to find the severed head of D'rimo. In the confusion, the living D'rimo fires his disruptor and kills Richard. The house is swarmed with Karemma and takes the remaining family members and the Flotsam crew into custody.
D'rimo reveals that he is not a shapeshifter or an imposter, but rather a visitor from another universe. Camila immediately recognizes the severity not just of their situation, but also correctly assumes that Unknown Power G90B is actually The Confederation, a Karemma/Dosi power from an alternate universe where the Dominion never took power. D'rimo then announces that he intends to use the Flotsam to collect and deliver the current birythium load to an undisclosed location, and that if Messara and her crew wish to survive, they will cooperate. Camila and her small crew all reluctantly agree.
That night, clustered in the town square with all of the colonists under guard, Camila quietly discusses their options with Wallace, Foy, and Tetnel. They agree that the situation is less than ideal, and that they will look for the first opportunity to escape after leaving Mellon. Emily Carter arrives and complicates matters by insisting that she travel with the Flotsam crew in order to learn more about this Confederation.
Days later, the Flotsam, towing cargo pods with the mineral, arrives at an asteroid field under a fighter escort. The crew discovers a sister ship to D'rimo's resting inside an asteroid dock that is also sporting battle damage and exposed areas of the ship. Camila prompts her team that it's time to take action. The crew subdues their Karemma watchers, to which Emily protests, unaware of their rebellious plot. Camila drops her guard and identity in order to defuse Emily and regain control of the situation. She then directs the crew to launch the pods at the ship under repair, and fires a weapons salvo. Distracted by attempting to save their capital ship, the Confederation fighters break rank, allowing the Flotsam to escape.

Desperate for information and intelligence, the Runabout Kwando is sent back undercover once again with a small team led by Camila Di Pasquale. Can they get close enough to the elusive inner circle and catch a glimpse of this mysterious benefactor?

Or will she and her team be caught by those hunting Starfleet?

Summary

Lieutenant Commander Camila Di Pasquale finds herself with a new mission: to return to her undercover persona as Francisca Massara and take a crew with her in order to learn more about Unknown Power G90B from the civilian and pirate angle. Before she assembles a team, she first returns to the Runabout Kwando, which has been temporarily christened as the Flotsam. There, she requests that Lieutenant Ranul Frex join her for some modification to the ship's transporter and power systems. The two work together for several hours, getting to know each other as the upgrades are completed.

The following morning, Di Pasquale assembles her team. From security, she selects Lieutenant JG Sunni Wallace (undercover as Ainsley Kryll) and Crewman Nicolas Foy (Jack Smith). They are also joined by Intelligence Officer Ensign Ronin Tetnel (Aristotle Milan). Di Pasquale briefs the team and establishes that their mission is open ended, only to return when Commander Di Pasquale feels they have enough information. When the briefing is completed, the Flotsam departs the Black Hawk and crosses the new Federation border into contested space.

A week later, the Flotsam arrives at the Rakhari Colony where Di Pasquale had carried the Gaittithe's probes nearly two weeks ago. The undercover team is greeted by Seskal, one of the pirates that had worked along side Di Pasquale/Massara. Overtures of trade and favors are discussed before Seskal reveals that they are needing some help exporting crops and other items to a human colony on Mellon to assist them with mining birythium from their mountains. Camila agrees to haul their cargo, hoping that this shred of a lead can finally bear some fruit.

Upon arrival at Mellon, the crew of the Flotsam is greeted by Richard Carter, the leader of the Golden Stars.
