Pity is Treason (Part 5)

Scarlet was looking over the most recent Intelligence report regarding the Quadrant as she was taking a sip from her cup of coffee, the chatter regarding the Consortium had increased significantly over the past few days and by all indications something was going to happen in the very near future. It was one of the reasons they had decided to hold off on remaining on Deep Space 11 but rather head for Starbase Unity as to keep the Task Force command structure properly divided across the quadrant. Just as she was starting to feel like today might actually be a quiet day Nova and Shaun walked into her office. “Commodore, we have lost all communications to the rest of the Task Force. Only a single message is being broadcasted on the available channels. Pity is treason” Shaun said, he much like Scarlet very well knew what it meant. While neither knew the phrase that was going to be used they had long since read the report that one would be used to begin undoing all of the Federation’s work in the quadrant.

“Are you sure Lieutenant?” Scarlet asked, she realized he was but considering the nature of it all some confirmation was fairly important.

“Yes, sir. There is no doubt about it however without communications to the Admiral or his staff or anything for that matter we can not establish just how much damage is being done.”Shaun responded.

Without even realizing it Scarlet slammed her fist onto the desk. “Nova, please inform Captain Grax that I would like to speak to him” She ordered while turning to the window, today was not going to be quiet. As she looked out the window a feeling of dread went through her thinking about what was happening outside there and how the Scorpio right now was in no position to do anything about it.

As the Betazoid Commander of the facility walked into Scarlet’s office it was time to get back to business. “Commander Grax thank you for getting here so fast” Scarlet said as she took her seat behind the desk again.

The Betazoid quickly complied. “Commodore, the sudden loss of communications. Has it finally happened?”

Scarlet nodded “I am afraid it has, have you implemented my orders regarding communications between the facility and the outside world?”

The Betazoid simply nodded. “Yes, sir. We have restricted all external communications to this office and the operations center. As far as we can tell the phrase has not reached the Starbase crew yet though it is only a question how long we can keep Consortium loyalists from acting.”

It was a legitimate concern but not one preparations had not been made for. “I understand” She said before she finished the coffee in her cup. “I am hereby authorizing the implementation of Theta Protocol.”

She could barely finish the sentence until the Betazoid’s combadge turned on.

“Operations to Commander Grax, the USS Ottawa is on an intercept course to the facility. They are not responding to any hails and are not scheduled for arrival. ETA half an hour” A female voice on the other side of the channel said.

“They are certainly not underestimating us, Commander go to red alert and implement the protocol. The last thing we need is a rebellion inside the base while fighting off a ship with no significant support. Lieutenant Braddock take a Warhammer and head for the location of the Scorpio. You will be my liaison there until we can restore communications to the fleet”
