Pity is Treason (Part 7)

Time was unforgiving, in the past half hour they had done everything they could to bring the station up to combat readiness but the reality was that even if they had had days to prepare the station could not withstand an attack very long. Shields could hold only so long and the defenses were simply pathetic. That being said, it really was all they could do. As the ship entered communications range Shawn ordered the Chief of Station Operations Lieutenant Commander Syvar to open a channel.

“USS Ottawa, this is Commander Shawn Grax, Commanding Officer of Starbase Unity. Hold your current position and identify your reasons for approaching the base without prior notice or clear objectives” He said however there would be no response from the other side.

Tensions in the Station Operations were rising and even Scarlet who was used to combat by now felt anxious.

“Syvar, prepare our weapons” Shawn continued before turning to Scarlet. “Commodore, it might be possible to get you away from the station unseen before they attack on the remaining runabout.” To his surprise however she shook her head. “It’s too late for that Commander. We stand and fight all together here, perhaps we will make it. Perhaps we will not. However we will fight”

As soon as the ship entered weapons range a response would finally come. “Starbase Unity, you have been found to hold a wanted fugitive. Commodore Scarlet Cameron is wanted for treason and sedition. Lower your defenses and hand over the fugitive immediately or you will be deemed an accomplice.”

Before Shawn could even respond an explosion rocked the station. “What the hell is going on?”

“Sir, there was a major explosion near the Gamma Sector shield generator. The generator has been taken down and the region has been exposed. Attempts were made to detonate similar devices near other generators.” Syvar responded, desperately trying to fix the problems from the station however everyone knew there wasn’t enough time for that. Gamma held a majority of both the living quarters and the civilian element on the base.

“USS Ottawa, please provide evidence of these charges. We have received no communications regarding any arrest warrant from Starfleet Command” Shawn knew there was no warrant but any trick to get some more time could allow for help to arrive by some miracle.

“Sir, the Ottawa is charging weapons, they are targeting the living quarters… They have fired!” Syvar said as several alerts started to trigger throughout the room.

“Return fire, everything we have” Several salvos were launched however the outdated and in general weak torpedoes had little effect. Those that actually hit the ship would only do minor damage while the phaser was too weak to even affect the ship’s shields. Meanwhile without protection from the shields the enemy torpedoes hit the unprotected parts hard. Dozens of explosions rocked the facility as casualty reports rushed in. Once the Ottawa started redirecting their fire to the still shielded parts of the station things got a bit more quiet but not my much.

“Sir, at this rate the shields are going to fail in two minutes.” Syvar said once again. Realizing the fight was as good as over Shawn sat down in his chair. “Well it has been a good run” He said as the rapidly decreasing shield levels seemed almost like a countdown.

With less than 10% left some good news would finally appear. “Sir, the Ottawa has ceased its attacks and is retargeting their weapons. I cannot identify their new target due to sensor damage”

“It would appear someone is looking out for us after all Commander” Scarlet said as increasing everyone in the center watched as much information as the station’s systems could gather on what was happening above.

It was at this point that there would be one more surprise for the staff. Having remained silent Major Kennedy, the XO rose from his chair and pulled his phaser which he promptly targeted at Scarlet.

“Pity is treason!” He yelled as the phaser, set to kill was fired and Shawn could only barely push Scarlet out of harm’s way. Security officers quickly stunned the Major and Scarlet was safe however the same could not be said for the Shawn.

The crew would not be given much time to process the loss of their Commanding Officer as sensor data indicated the Ottawa had changed its course away from the station.

“Commander Syvar, open a general localized channel requesting whoever is there to identify themselves” Scarlet ordered, for now assuming command of the facility.
