- The Frontier Day festivities are disrupted by a Borg/Changeling alliance which sees Starfleet personnel under the age of 25 get assimilated into the Collective. Rather than assimilate the fleet, the alliance sees the drones turn on Starfleet, destroy Spacedock, and attack Earth. The alliance is disrupted by Jean-Luc Picard and the command crew of the USS Enterprise-D. All assimilated officers are freed, but Starfleet finds itself devastated.

- Commodore Geordi La Forge is assigned to repair and rebuild the fleet using all available naval yards. The process is expected to take several years. Mothballed projects and initiatives are reviewed and evaluated based on their ability to provide relief during this rebuilding period. Among the selections is Project EDEN which is directed to be built into a new testbed, the nearly completed USS Valiant.

- The USS Valiant departs Spacedock, bound for the Epsilon Indi sector to conduct EDEN field tests. Along the way, the Valiant encounters an ion storm, which disables the vessel (Valiant 1: Project Eden).
