The Chabanlons are a race of marsupials. The entire species is addicted to a plant pollen that is common on their world. The microscopic pollen is carried on the wind and reaches every island and continent. It is customary for them to eat the powdered bones of their deceased family members.

When the Vasco de Gama made contact in 2372, the away team suffered massive withdrawal effects when returning to their ship. The Chief Medical Officer was able to create a treatment plan for the away team. Most were able to recover, with the Vulcans requiring regular doses of the pollen to continue breathing properly. Two members of the crew elected to remain on the planet to further study the species and continue living with the addictive pollen.

The Chabanlons have a trading outpost on Deep Space 15 while other members of their species have found a way to market concentrated doses of their Chabanlon Pollen on the black market as a highly addictive drug.
