The sleek Intrepid-class Starship slipped into a low orbit above the planet Selam, a world of ochre-colored sand dunes, terra cotta oceans, dark red vegetation, and yellow-colored sky. Commander Suresh looked at the viewscreen, and was mildly dismayed at the complete absence of blues and greens in the planet&#039;s color palette. She held up her cup of masala tea, and took a sip. The burning liquid filled her with warmth, as the aromas of nutmeg, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon and clove burst on her tastebuds. She spread her hand around the warm cup - her fingers always felt too cold.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Suresh looked out the corner of her eye at Captain Marezzon. The Benzite was examining a data padd containing Starfleet&#039;s orders for the umpteenth time. She knew he was uncomfortable with the situation, but there was nothing she could do to ease her commanding officer&#039;s concerns. They had discussed this several times already.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Admiral Adislo, the commander of Starfleet&#039;s task force in the Gamma Quadrant, had been receiving unconfirmed intelligence reports of an impending threat to Starfleet and Federation interests in the sector. The reports had been fairly nebulous, but threatening enough to warrant Adislo sending the Chimera on an expedition to Selam, to open negotiations for a mutual defense treaty between Starfleet and this ancient Gamma Quadrant power.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
There was a beep from one of the stations behind the Command Center. &amp;quot;Message from the capital, Captain,&amp;quot; called out the Operations officer, a young Bolian named Porax. &amp;quot;They are expecting you.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Captain Marezzon turned to the young Bolian, and drew a breath from his respiratory device. &amp;quot;Tell them I&#039;m on my way,&amp;quot; he said. &amp;quot;Scan the upper atmosphere. Can you detect the radiation that we were warned about?&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Porax nodded. &amp;quot;Confirmed. The ambient radiation in the upper atmosphere will make transporters inoperative.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;Very well, we&#039;ll take a shuttle then,&amp;quot; said Captain Marezzon. He turned to Commander Suresh. &amp;quot;The ship is yours, Commander,&amp;quot; he said.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Suresh rose from her seat and moved to the chair on her left, the Captain&#039;s chair. She made sure to take her cup of tea along, wrapped in her fingers, warming her hands.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Marezzon walked to the turbolift, followed by Lieutenant Camarra, the ship&#039;s Betazoid Counselor, who would be helping in these negotiations. Suresh watched the turbolift doors close on the two officers, and settled into the Command chair. She activated the display on the armrest, and brought up the message she had received moments before, to confirm that the time had indeed come.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;Pity is treason.&amp;quot; The words on the screen burned in her mind.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
She had relayed the message to the ship&#039;s Chief Engineer, as well as the Chief of Security, Lieutenant Commander Simoneau. She glanced over her shoulder at the Tactical station, where the tall Security officer was towering over the rest of the Bridge, and nodded. Everything was set.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;Shuttlecraft One has cleared the shuttlebay,&amp;quot; reported Ensign Porax. &amp;quot;Entering the upper atmosphere in three minutes.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Suresh nodded. She got up out of the command chair, and walked over to the tactical station to monitor the shuttle&#039;s progress. She placed her hand on Simoneau&#039;s shoulder. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
And then it happened.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The sensor schematic showed the small blip that was the shuttle approaching the Selam atmosphere, coming down at a tangential angle to the planet, for a soft entry that would minimize air friction against the shuttle&#039;s hull. The entry was proceeding smoothly, almost textbook. Lieutenant Kelley was a good pilot, Suresh remembered. A shame to waste such fine talent. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As they watched, the shuttle exploded, about ten kilometers over the planet&#039;s stratosphere. The ship&#039;s sensors recorded the explosion, then the shuttle vanished from the sensor display. The blip that was the shuttle disappeared, and the planet was all that remained.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Suresh eyed the Operations officer. &amp;quot;Report,&amp;quot; she ordered, almost too calmly.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The young Bolian looked panicked. He was working his console furiously. &amp;quot;Checking, Commander! The shuttle is… Gone!&amp;quot; He looked up at Suresh. &amp;quot;No life signs. Captain Marezzon…&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Suresh focused her gaze on the main viewscreen, where the image of the shuttle had been replaced by an expanding debris field, that was slowly drifting down to the planet below, trapped by its gravity. Soon there would be nothing left, as the debris would burn up in the atmosphere. No evidence of what had caused the explosion.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;What happened?&amp;quot; she asked, lifting her cup of tea to her mouth to take a sip.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Porax shook his head, and kept working on his console. &amp;quot;I don&#039;t know, Ma&#039;am.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;Can you access the shuttle&#039;s logs? Can you determine what caused the explosion?&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Porax remained focused on his workstation. &amp;quot;I only have partial logs,&amp;quot; he reported. &amp;quot;The planetary radiation might have interfered with the uplink from the shuttle.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Suresh nodded. They might never be able to determine the cause of the explosion. She exchanged glances with Lieutenant Commander Simoneau. &amp;quot;Order the senior staff to report to the observation lounge immediately.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;hr&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Five minutes later&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;hr&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The remaining Senior officers had assembled in the Observation lounge. All of the faces looked distraught, and everyone seemed to be trying to make sense of what had just happened. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Suresh took up position at the head of the table. &amp;quot;Less than ten minutes ago, there was an explosion aboard Shuttlecraft One. Captain Marezzon, Counselor Camarra, and Flight Control Officer Kelley, have died.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
She paused, letting the news sink in. &amp;quot;For some time now, Gamma Command has been receiving unconfirmed reports that a rogue group, called the Consortium, may have infiltrated the ranks of Starfleet, and is seeking to take over. It is our belief that the Captain may have been targeted, due to the nature of our mission here.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
She nodded to Commander Simoneau, who pressed a button on the table, and turned to the monitor. The Federation emblem disappeared, replaced with the image of Commodore Terlexa, the commanding officer of Deep Space 11.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;Commodore,&amp;quot; greeted Suresh, feigning surprise. &amp;quot;I was attempting to contact Admiral Adislo.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;I know,&amp;quot; came Terlexa&#039;s terse reply. &amp;quot;I&#039;m sorry to report that the Admiral is unavailable. We are searching for him. Admiral Adislo, Rear Admiral Cameron, and Commodore O&#039;Connell are suspected of treason, sedition, and conspiracy against the Federation.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Suresh blinked. &amp;quot;That is very hard to believe,&amp;quot; she said, exchanging glances with the Chimera&#039;s senior staff.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;I&#039;m afraid we have compelling evidence against them.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;I&#039;ll have to defer to you on this,&amp;quot; conceded Suresh. &amp;quot;But we also have urgent matters to bring to your attention. I&#039;m sorry I have to report the deaths of Captain Marezzon, Counselor Camarra, and Flight Officer Kelley, in a shuttle accident.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Terlexa hung her head low, and stared at her table for a few seconds before taking a deep breath, and returning her attention to the screen. &amp;quot;So now we can add charges of murder to Adislo&#039;s slate,&amp;quot; she mused. &amp;quot;I&#039;m sure this was a Consortium attack. We&#039;ve had similar reports from other ships, as well.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Suresh frowned. &amp;quot;Who else did we lose?&amp;quot; she asked.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Terlexa looked at a list on a data padd she was holding. &amp;quot;The Beifong, the Maketu, the Callisto and the Valcour have been overrun by Consortium forces,&amp;quot; she said. &amp;quot;The Antares has been severely damaged, and the Ottawa is missing. That&#039;s as much as we know for now. The situation seems to be evolving rapidly.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
She straightened her spine, and her voice became more authoritative. &amp;quot;Commander Suresh, in light of recent events, I believe a change in the Chimera&#039;s command structure would be counterproductive. I hereby promote you to the field commission of Captain. The Chimera is yours. See to it that it is defended against our enemies.&amp;quot; She paused. &amp;quot;I wish the circumstances were different, but Starfleet is under attack. You may choose your First Officer amongst your senior staff. Choose wisely, as these are troubled times. Terlexa out.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Suresh turned to her senior staff, and examined their stern faces. Disbelief showed on several of them, anger, and grief over the loss of their Captain and Counselor. They&#039;d been serving together for years, and the sudden loss was difficult to accept for many of them. Only the faces of Simoneau, and the ship&#039;s Tellarite Chief Engineer, Lieutenant Krex, betrayed no emotion. She could see tears welling up in the eyes of Doctor Young, the ship&#039;s Chief Medical Officer, and Lieutenant T&#039;Jara, the ship&#039;s Chief Science Officer, exhibited her typical Vulcan calm, but her arms were stiff, betraying her struggle to contain herself.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;You heard the Commodore,&amp;quot; said Suresh. &amp;quot;We are under attack. Under the circumstances, I believe Commander Simoneau, our Tactical officer, would be the ideal choice for First Officer.&amp;quot; She walked over to Simoneau&#039;s seat, and shook his hand. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
She returned to her position at the head of the conference table. &amp;quot;Now, let&#039;s consider what we know so far. Admiral Adislo and the rest of the Gamma Command senior staff are accused of treason. Consortium forces have seized control of the Maketu, Callisto, Beifong and Valcour.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Simoneau checked his data padd. &amp;quot;At last report,&amp;quot; he spoke up, &amp;quot;Callisto and Maketu were less than ten light-years from here.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;Then those are our targets,&amp;quot; declared Suresh. &amp;quot;To disable those ships, and arrest those responsible for the death of our Captain, our friend and comrade.&amp;quot; Her features hardened. &amp;quot;Let us not take pity on those who killed such fine officers, who attacked the Antares, and who may have destroyed the Ottawa. Let our justice be swift, and firm. Pity would be treason.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
She saw Porax, the Operations officer, frowning.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;lt;hr&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Ensign Porax raced to the Operations office. He logged into his console, and tried to access the shuttle&#039;s protected computer core, before it fell out of orbit and disintegrated in the atmosphere. The unit was badly damaged, and there was a lot of interference from the ambient atmospheric radiation, but he could still get bits and pieces of information from it, and combine them with the ship&#039;s own sensor logs. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
After an hour of searching, he had managed to isolate one odd transmission. It seemed to be a coded subspace transmission, from the Chimera to the shuttle - but the hailing frequencies from the ship to the shuttle had been closed at the time. And the explosion had occurred two seconds later.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It was clear to him now that the explosion was a result of sabotage, and that the detonation signal had come from the Chimera herself. The murderers were here. Now he had to work through the ship&#039;s own logs, and determine where the transmission had come from.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The door to the Operations office opened, and Suresh walked in, her uniform now bearing the four pips of a Captain. Porax was startled to see that she was followed by a tall alien. Standing at a little over seven feet, the alien had grey purplish skin, with dark red circles around his deep-set yellow eyes. He had yellow serrated teeth, and wore burgundy robes, with a stiff collar that rose up to his ears. His head was elongated, topped with a bald dome.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;Ensign,&amp;quot; said Suresh. &amp;quot;This is Minister K&#039;Farl, of the Selamat Security Agency. He is here to help in your investigation of the shuttle accident.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Porax turned to the tall alien, and gave a short bow. &amp;quot;Minister,&amp;quot; he greeted, looking into the Selamat&#039;s eyes.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
He turned back to Suresh. &amp;quot;I have reason to believe the signal to destroy the shuttle came from the Chimera,&amp;quot; he began.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Suresh raised an eyebrow. &amp;quot;Do you now,&amp;quot; she said. &amp;quot;I do believe you need to have a long talk with the Minister. I&#039;ll leave you two alone, and make sure you&#039;re not disturbed.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
She exited the Operations office, leaving Porax alone with Minister K&#039;Farl. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Bolian looked at the Selamat official, and was somewhat surprised to see him staring at him with those yellow eyes of his.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
His deep-set yellow eyes.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Selamat bared his teeth, and inhaled.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
And bore his deep-set yellow eyes into Porax&#039;s own….&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

She was in the Operations Center on that planet when the Dominion conquerred Betazed. Her husband and two young daughters sought to escape in one of the personnel transports evacuating the planet; they were destroyed by the Dominion invasion force.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This led to her resentment of Starfleet. Eventually she was assigned to command Deep Space 11, the local command center for Starfleet in the Gamma Quadrant, under Admiral Adislo. She came across telepathic members of the Consortium, who detected her resentment of Starfleet, and used it to gain an ally for their cause. She leads the former Starfleet forces who have turned to the Consortium.&lt;br /&gt;

Her husband and two young daughters sought to escape in one of the personnel transports evacuating the planet; they were destroyed by the Dominion invasion force.&lt;br /&gt;

This led to her resentment of Starfleet. Eventually she was assigned to command Deep Space 11, the local command center for Starfleet in the Gamma Quadrant, under Admiral Adislo. She came across telepathic members of the Consortium, who detected her resentment of Starfleet, and used it to gain an ally for their cause. She leads the former Starfleet forces who have turned to the Consortium.&lt;br /&gt;

The USS Freedom was quickly overrun by a Consortium mutiny team. At the time, the Freedom, [[USS Akihito]] and [[USS Maketu]] were on assignment to the Altair system. When the takeover of the Maketu and Akihito failed, the Freedom attempted to destroy both vessels, and failed in the process.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Not long afterwards, the USS Freedom disappeared from all sensor and communications traffic. Since then, the Freedom has been branded MIA.&lt;br /&gt;

The Saber Class of starship was born out of the need for a scout ship, as well as to counter smaller ships of other powers, such as the Cardassian warship known as the Hediki. These ships were small, maneuverable and well armed. In 2359 a project began to develop a new breed of combat based, multi-sectional starship to boost Starfleet&#039;s combat role. Later named the Prometheus Class, the ship was intended to be able to separate allowing for a distinct tactical advantage turning a single starship into, essentially, three. Taking advantage of features like the quantum torpedo, Type-XII phaser arrays, and new shielding, the Prometheus Class became Starfleet&#039;s premier deep space tactical ship.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Prometheus is the culmination of several separate research projects which have been combined into one prototype testbed. Starfleet has long recognized that, all other factors being even, vessels with high maneuverability can gain a significant combat advantage. The physics of warp drive dictate that for a given engine capacity the least massive vessel will have the greatest maneuverability - but minimizing vessel size is at odds with the large number of scientific and diplomatic functions which a starship must be able to perform. One obvious solution to this problem was to design ships that are able to configure themselves for the mission at hand, but the non-military nature of Starfleet gave research in this area a relatively low priority. However, the Galaxy Class did incorporate some of these ideas in that the saucer section was built to be easily separated and re-attached without outside support. Without the bulk of the saucer the stardrive section was much more maneuverable, in theory giving it a significant combat advantage over a saucer-equipped Galaxy. In practice, however, this operation is somewhat unwieldy on the Galaxy class and leaves the saucer, which does not have an independent warp drive, extremely vulnerable to attack. In addition, the saucer section contains the Galaxy&#039;s two longest phaser arrays and can provide a significant reserve of power from its fusion reactors. The Galaxy Class has therefore not used this capability very often.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In 2361 Starfleet initiated a research project intended to explore the possibility of a true multi-section vessel. The requirement called for a vessel able to separate into at least two independent sections, each with a fully functional warp drive of its own. One would be capable of launching an attack with almost the full ships weaponry, at high speed and maneuverability. The other, comprising the scientific, diplomatic and accommodation sections, would clear the area at high warp carrying the civilian complement. Much of the technology being developed for the Intrepid Project was included in this design, with the result that the theoretical model finalized in 2363 bore a close resemblance to the Intrepid herself.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In 2364 Starfleet was considering moving to a production basis with the multi-section starship. However, during this year contact with the Romulans was re-established when the USS Enterprise encountered a Romulan Warbird at the Neutral Zone. The warbird appeared to outgun the Enterprise - then Starfleet&#039;s most powerful ship - by a moderately considerable margin and Starfleet was confronted with what appeared to be a powerful and aggressive enemy. As part of their response Starfleet requested a complete re-design of the multi-section starship. The new requirement called for an almost totally re-designed vessel; the ship would be in three sections, each of which would have an independent warp core and drive system. The scientific and diplomatic sections were removed in favor of increased armament and power for the weapons.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
During the development phase Starfleet also encountered the Borg and the Dominion, both hostile and powerful enemies. This led to an ever-accelerating effort to turn the new ship into a pure combat vessel; much technology from other projects was put into what was now dubbed the &amp;quot;multi-vector assault starship&amp;quot;. In place of the type-X phaser arrays that the original ship had shared with the Intrepid Class, the Type-XII phaser arrays from the Sovereign Project were included. The shield system was massively upgraded and, in light of the subsequent Borg attack, closely based on the auto-modulating shields of the Sovereign. The advanced warp engine design included many elements of the Sovereign Class, while the ablative armor, high capacity structural integrity fields and quantum torpedo tubes developed for the Defiant Project were also included.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This technology combined to make the new starship one of the most massively armed and armored vessels of its size ever contemplated, let alone built. Her relatively small size combined with incredible speed and maneuverability when in multi-vector assault mode. When the prototype USS Prometheus was launched in late 2373 she was thought to have a combat capacity an amazing nine times that of the equally-sized Intrepid class, while her Type XII phasers made her a formidable foe for any vessel in the Alpha Quadrant. The Prometheus is comparatively armed to the Sovereign Class, yet faster, more maneuverable, and has the advantage of being able to attack from several angles at once.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
During the tail end of it&#039;s deep space shakedown, the Prometheus was hijacked by agents of the Tal Shiar in an attempt by the Romulans to gain intelligence about the new ship and the Federation&#039;s newest starship systems. During this incident the ship was recaptured by Starfleet forces but was still forced to engage in combat with three Romulan Warbirds. Out performing the rest of the Starfleet task group sent to rescue it, the Prometheus was able to heavily damage all three warbirds into retreat. The performance of the Prometheus during this accidental live-fire trial exceeded all expectations for the ship. With Starfleet, by this time, losing ground against the Dominion, the class was moved into production. Three semi-completed ships finished outfitting and were commissioned in late 2374. However, the four Prometheus Class ships arrived in too limited numbers and too late to make an impact on the war. Full series production began in early 2375 but, due to the closure of the war, and Starfleet&#039;s return to the mandate of peaceful exploration, the Prometheus Class is to be produced in limited numbers.&lt;br /&gt;

In 2370 a new class of ship entered service in Starfleet. The ship would be, when commissioned, the fastest class of starship in service within any fleet. She would be classed as a frigate/light explorer/scout ship. She would also be well-armed, manoeuvrable, well protected, and posses a sensor suite comparable to the Galaxy Class&#039;. The ship featured a unique warp nacelle design, which allowed the nacelles to pivot up when in warp flight, thereby improving the warp field. The class was also the first to use bioneural gel packs in the computer systems.&lt;br /&gt;

The Insignia-class is one of Starfleet&#039;s newest cruiser platforms. Originally conceived out of a need to circumvent the warp speed limitations of the 2370&#039;s, the class underwent several design changes that reflected continually changing design requirements. The final form of the vessel was quite different from the original conception, but has gone on to become one of the fleet&#039;s most capable craft classes.&lt;br /&gt;

The Sovereign Class starship was born out the necessity for more combat oriented starships to help combat the Borg Collective, yet keep host to a wide variety of exploratory and diplomatic missions during peacetime. Originally three starship designs were fielded to combat the Borg: Project Sovereign, [[Defiant-Class|Project Defiant]] and [[Nova-Class|Project Nova]]. Both the Defiant and Nova projects were considered entirely too small to field what was needed; however they were later rebuilt into separate starship designs. For the mainstay of what the project called for, the Sovereign design was chosen to essentially replace the [[Galaxy-Class]] as the flagship design of the [[Federation]].&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Implementation of the design of the starship and construction began in 2367. Construction moved along quickly and integrating some of the newest Federation technologies into the ship design was proving to be surprisingly easy. The integration of the bio-neural gel pack with the already conventional isolinear chip system proved to have few complications. Other new systems included the field testing of the quantum torpedo turret system, enhanced regenerative shielding system, energy-dispersive ablative hull armor, redesigned warp drive and the previously classified &amp;quot;Type-X+&amp;quot; phaser systems. The Type-X+ would be later reclassified as the Type-XII.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The &#039;&#039;USS Sovereign&#039;&#039; was finally completed in 2369 and began its shakedown cruise along the Romulan Neutral Zone. Many aspects of the Sovereign proved to be well above expectations during testing. After eight months of shakedown in open space, the Sovereign was returned to dry dock for finalization and commission.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Sovereign proved to be a well-founded design in terms of its combat abilities. However it lacked the high maneuverability of ships similar to its size or the ability to achieve the higher warp speeds seen in the Intrepid and Prometheus Classes. That being said, the ship more then made up for itself in terms of phaser power, torpedo compliment, and torpedo tube placement, which supplemented the forward quantum turret.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Several more of the class were put into production and even the &#039;&#039;USS Enterprise&#039;&#039;, the flagship of the Federation, was readmitted into service as a Sovereign class. The first real test for the Sovereign Class was during the Battle of Sector 001 in which the &#039;&#039;Enterprise&#039;&#039; arrived in time to help destroyed the Borg vessel in conjunction with the rest of the fleet. Later, during the Dominion War, the &#039;&#039;Sovereign&#039;&#039; and &#039;&#039;Enterprise&#039;&#039; saw combat while the other ships were slowed in their production in favor of the smaller, more powerful and quicker to build Defiant Class. Near the end of the war six more of the class were completed and two helped with the Jem&#039;Hadar clean up across the quadrant.&lt;br /&gt;

Following the war, the Sovereign class was re-tasked with front line exploration of open space along with its fellow exploration-driven starships. In the decade following the close of the Dominion War, the Sovereign class starships have served in a variety of roles as flagships, command and control centers, diplomatic envoys, first contact headquarters, front line defensive vessels, exploratory starships, scientific couriers and troop transports. The versatility and endless abilities of the Sovereign has proven it to be a worthwhile design, and it will continue being, for many decades, the mainstay of the Federation fleet.&lt;br /&gt;

The Luna-class is Starfleet&#039;s newest-generation long-range explorer, a starship not built specifically for combat, but like the Constitution-class of the previous century, a vessel designed for a long-term multipurpose mission into uncharted space. Equipped with conventional tactical systems (deflector shields; phasers; quantum torpedoes), Luna also boasts state-of-the-art propulsion and cutting-edge scientific equipment, as well as being a testbed for experimental science tech not yet available on other classes.&lt;br /&gt;

The Luna-Class Development Project was initiated in 2369 in response to the discovery of the Bajoran wormhole, and originally conceived as leading a planned Starfleet wave of deep-space exploration in the Gamma Quadrant. The project was spearheaded by Dr. (Commander) Xin Ra-Havreii, a Starfleet theoretical engineer at Utopia Planitia. Field testing on the prototype USS Luna was under way by 2372 in the Alpha Quadrant, and construction of the fleet was scheduled to begin the following year. Upon the war&#039;s end in late 2375, Dr. Ra-Havreii correctly judged that the Federation&#039;s cultural psychology would eventually shift back toward its pre-war ideals, and pushed to have the Luna-class revisited as a major step toward resuming Starfleet&#039;s mission of peaceful exploration (even though the class would no longer be assigned exclusively to the exploration of the Gamma Quadrant). Construction of an initial fleet of twelve Luna-class vessels was completed by 2379, and the Titan was offered to William T. Riker, one of many command officers eager to put the strife of the last decade behind him.&lt;br /&gt;

The USS O&#039;Carroll is the flagship of [[Task Group Paladin]] formerly commanded by Commodore [[Zachary O&#039;Connell]]. Following outing of [[The Consortium]], Commodore O&#039;Connell was transferred to [[Starbase Unity]] and his wife, Commander [[Jillian O&#039;Connell]] was assigned as the new Commanding Officer.&lt;br /&gt;

== The Event ==&lt;br /&gt;

When &amp;quot;Pity Is Treason&amp;quot; was broadcast, the ship&#039;s Chief Medical Officer was revealed to be a Consortium agent, along with ten others on board. They immediately attempted to take the bridge, resulting in the loss of the First Officer&#039;s life. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Another team attempted to take Engineering, and in a worse-case scenario, destroy the warp core, but the attempt was prevented by the Engineering staff. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The USS O&#039;Carroll then responded to a distress call at Starbase Unity, who was under attack by the [[USS Ottawa]]. Zachary made quick work of disabling the Ottawa and thereby saving Unity.&lt;br /&gt;

== Crisis at Gavara ==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The O&#039;Carroll&#039;s first assignment under Commander Jillian O&#039;Connell&#039;s command was to prevent the Consortium from arming [[Gavara]] as part of a staging ground to strike Unity. The O&#039;Carroll would intercept the shipments and confiscate the weapons. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This attracted the scourge of Commodore [[Juliana Terlexa]], who assigned the [[USS Black Hawk]] to intercept and apprehend the O&#039;Carroll. The Black Hawk struggled at first to confront the O&#039;Carroll, but upon realizing who commanded the Black Hawk, Jillian surrendered. After confirming that her old classmate [[Harvey Geisler]] was not Consortium, Jillian was able to plant enough seeds of doubt in his mind to realize that the Black Hawk was following Consortium orders.&lt;br /&gt;
